"The CosmoTweenz Environmental Awareness Activities create the space for young people to bridge their sense of awareness and perspective taking from people to other living things. In this way, tweens learn to recognize their relationship to the environment and consider the negative and positive effects of their actions through fun and engaging activities. The CosmoTweenz Environmental Awareness Activities strive to be honest in representing the complexity of environmental issues without inducing hopelessness. These playful activities aim to expand empathy and give young people opportunities to act.
The activities consist of 24 scenarios, each with a corresponding illustration, narrative, and guiding questions. The scenarios are divided into three categories: Noticing Your Surroundings, Making a Change at Home or at School, and Connecting to Others. Each scenario is meant to be discussed over the course of five 10-15 minute sessions. For example, in the “Noticing Your Surroundings” activities, Day 1 is about practicing noticing, Day 2 is for sharing observations and feelings, Day 3 is about imagining the feelings of others and analyzing patterns, Day 4 is about considering the effects on others, and Day 5 is for brainstorming actions. In each day’s activities, tweens have the opportunity to practice critical thinking skills, develop thoughtful responses, use curiosity as an approach, and create imaginative solutions.
Educators and caregivers can facilitate meaningful conversation that builds environmental awareness for tweens, helping them to navigate what it means to be conscientious stewards of Planet Earth.
