"How can children make thoughtful decisions and gain the tools necessary to navigate challenging situations in their lives? How can children practice decision-making and explore the consequences of their choices in a safe and educational way? How can children strengthen their social emotional skills and grow to recognize their role in creating social worlds?
The CosmoTweenz “Three Choices... And Then What Happens?” Activity is a set of 53 cards with real life scenarios faced by tweens. The activity is designed to provide an opportunity for children ages 8 to 12 years old to have brief but meaningful conversations with their peers, in the presence of an adult, about experiences that are challenging to navigate. These activities help tweens to image different social outcomes based on their actions and the possible responses of others. It allows tweens to exercise their judgement, imagination, creativity, critical thinking, and understanding safely using hypothetical situations.
On each card, tweens are presented with a scenario and asked to imagine three possible and productive options for how to respond. From there, tweens consider what might happen next if they choose each of the options. Adults guide the conversation by helping tweens imagine the positive possibilities as well as the potential downsides of tradeoffs of each option.
The 53 scenarios are divided into three categories: School, Friends, and Family. The scenarios were developed with insight from 8- to 11-year-olds from four countries, ensuring that these activities address real situations that tweens face in their daily lives.
The Three Choices Activities can be used on-line using the pdf found on the CosmoActivities website or downloaded, printed, and used for in person education. Parents, teachers, therapists, school counselors, caregivers, and any adults who work with children will find these activities useful. These activities can be completed one on one or in small groups.
