The Cosmopolis 2045 project has been a collaborative thought experiment involving many people and taking place over a number of years. It is, in fact, still on-going. The Cosmopolis 2045 website is a virtual depiction of a community set in the future (circa 2045) in which residents and leaders of the community have adopted a communication-centric view of how their own and other social worlds function. Cosmopolis 2045 is an initiative of the CMM Institute for Personal and Social Evolution.

What if we engaged and actively encouraged one another to engage in personal and social evolution? What if we built on social change initiatives happening now, in real-time all over the world?

The Cosmopolis 2045 website chronicles over 40 years of transformation of a typical suburban community first known as West Wiggington, then as as a fledgling aspiration renamed Cosmopolis in 2017, finally as the much more fully embodied community you will see depicted here in the year 2045. At the core of this transformation is the belief that if we are to live in a better social world, we have to be the ones to make it and the way to make it is through better communication practices.
When we understand how, together, we create both our present and our future, one conversation at a time, we can begin to imagine new possibilities. For Cosmopolites, communication is far more than exchanging information and ideas; it’s a dynamic social construction process in which the products we make together include relationships, personal identities, family values, traditions, institutions, and even forms of government.
